Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2005, St Julien
Ready to drink engaging, Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2005 is a ripe(attributable to manuel harvesting and grape selection), supple(for its refreshing red strawberry fruit and blackcurrant fruit from young vines from 15 to than 30 years old), forward wine (with mere 12% alchohol) with structure(cabernet based, gravelly soil, plot by plot vinification and aging, 20% new oak, 20-months oak ageing). It is relatively short though, but will be good enough to leave a good impression.
A second wine from Chateau Lagrange 3rd Growth St Julien, this is a great value considering its deployment of the same team and resources making the first wine Chateau Lagrange possible. The First Wine had been been criticised as tired and under-performing as a 3rd Growth, and some people still share this opinion today. Well, that sounds good. We probably won't give that a darn, as long as the wines reflect the terroir characters, taste good and are of the super value.
At a fraction of the price of the First Wine, we believe this second wine gives even value because:
In Vivino, 58% tasters voted Les Fief de Lagrange 2005 4 star and 12% voted it 5-star;
The weighted-average score is 88 in Wine Searcher, making this 2005 vintage one the best, together with 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2015;
There is adequate economies of scale to drive the production cost even lower, with acquisition by Suntory group, high annual production above 400,000 bottles; big plot of land over157 hectares;
Vintage 2005 has been hailed by Parker as the ‘Best Ever Made’ from Chateau Lagrange; and
a very high score JS 96 has been awarded to 2005 First Wine.
