Maison Trénel Clos Des Poncetys 2016, Saint-Véran

The ‘Clos des Poncetys’ vineyard located in ‘Davayé’ at the bottom of the rock of ‘Vergisson’ is on the border with Pouilly-Fuissé. The vineyard is composed of red clay on chalky bedrock with the vines averaging 55 years old. St Veran is mostly modern in style. But this Clos Des Poncetys 2016 is mineral and elegant. Thanks to its clay-limestone soil that are also powerful and incomparably long-lasting due to its direct southern exposure at Vergisson.

Fermented with indigenous yeasts, this wine undergoes no malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness, ageing in oak barrels for twelve months — the grape is 100% Chardonnay.

Established by Claude-Henri Trénel in 1928, Maison Trénel has been recognized internationally as one of the region's top independent négociants for decades. Trénel is considered a small Maison, producing roughly half a million bottles per year. To produce wines of the highest quality, Claude-Henri and his son André have forged exclusive relationships with many of the top grape growers of the region. Trénel bottles wines under many appellations, mostly from the very south of Burgundy, and is a highly respected reference point of superior quality Beaujolais. Maison Trénel is one of the classic negociant houses of Beaujolais and produces seven of the ten Beaujolais Crus. The wines are sourced from top vineyard sites, mostly planted with old vines. In 2015, Maison Trénel was purchased by Michel Chapoutier, who is one of the most successful winemakers of the last decade. Under Chapoutier’s guidance, the wines are reaching ever greater heights, with greater emphasis on Terroir and highlighting the differences between the various vineyard sites.

Parker awards 90 points, saying

"The 2016 Saint Veran Clos des Poncetys comes from 0.8 hectares of red clay and a chalky bedrock and one-quarter of the crop is matured in oak barrels for around ten months. It has a clean and precise bouquet: apple blossom and cold, wet stone, well defined and expanding in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a keen thread of acidity and just the right amount of tang courtesy of bitter lemon on the finish. I like the style and panache of this Saint-Véran. This is a well-crafted and very attractive Saint-Véran from Trenel.”
