Tua Rita Rosso dei Notri Toscana IGT, Italy 2017

Indigo coloured; tight rim. On the first nose, ripe and intense black fruits(blackberries, plums and ripe black cherries over more subtle notes of cocoa, liquorice and sweet spice. Seems brooding; some complexities(from mix of grapes). On the palate, juicy with nuances of tar, coffee and chocolate. No obvious wood; still harmonious. Medium body soft tannins and medium finish; yet very structured and created impressions of length and intensity. Sweetish finish; taniins and wood spices support throughout(this long?!). Minty. Simple though. A piece of good lamb rack will be perfect. Consistent ratings.

This youthful offering from Tua Rita is 50% Sangiovese and 50% blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, harvested in September from vineyards in the foothills of Suvereto, a small hilltop village in Tuscany. After a gentle pressing, the wine is aged for three months in French oak barriques and stainless steel tanks.

For a humble Rosso, commentaries are significant:

JS91 James Suckling This is a delicious red. As always, it shows delicious blackberries, walnuts and a light hazelnut character. Medium body, fine tannins and a clean finish. Nice tension at the end.

RP91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2017 Rosso dei Notri is afforded a careful pre-selection of grapes from the most important vines, and the harvest was particularly limited and selective in this hot vintage. The blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Sangiovese sees a brief fermentation process and just a touch of barrique to retain the signature elements of these grapes. In the end, this Rosso dei Notri emerges as soft and dark but uncomplicated. The fruit is ripe and succulent, all very reminiscent of the 2009 vintage. You can't beat this excellent value from Tuscany.
