Chateau Doyenne 2009

December 5, 2019

I know a lot about his wine from Bordeaux merchant Mr Philippe Quien back in the 2009 vintage tasting. Showing a little more tannic than it is now before bottling, this blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc are one of the consistently well-made over-achievers in Bordeaux. Ripe with quite some elegance. There are some gentle underbrush tones. Very enjoyable. Medium palated— decent scores, like 90. Now the wine is just ripe and easy to drink.

Chateau Doyenne locates about 10 miles south of the City of Bordeaux on the east or right bank of the River Garonne. It was bought in 1994 by Marie-Dominique who invested heavily and started making and bottling their wines; they do not send grapes to a co-operative. Michel Rolland is their consultant.

The total area is 13 hectares under vine spread over 11 different plots, so there is some diversity in taste.
