Chateau Senejac 2013 Revisted, CB

Updated: 5 days ago

We revisited this wine during our tasting session one Saturday afternoon in early April 2024. From that tasting, we affirmed that Senejac 2013 remained and represented a classic ruby colour with a tight rim. The aroma remained fragrant, with hints of dry purple and red flowers. The palate was a delightful journey, filled with the freshness of red cherries, the depth of blackcurrants, and the richness of dark cherries. The nose was lightish, with notes of sandalwood, a light dustiness, and a hint of meatiness, cedary with a touch of wood spice. The wine was round, easy, and full on the palate, well balanced, with adequate length leading to a medium finish reflecting grape characters. The fruit length was acceptable.

While it may not be as full-bodied as its 2012 counterpart, it compensates with a slightly fresher taste and intensity, creating intriguing complexities. This is achieved through a 48% Cabernet Sauvignon blend, 37% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine is fermented and nurtured in French oak for 15 months, with 33% new oak. The handpicked and sorted grapes from 45-year-old vines ensure sufficient production for good economies of scale. From an excellent vintage with outstanding balance, structure, and phenolic ripeness, this wine stands out for its quality and is stylistically akin to a mature Arsac Margaux. This is particularly impressive considering its aggressive low pricing! It has been upgraded to DD92.

A humble CB classification and origin offer a unique experience; this bottle comes from the historic Chateau Senejac, a vineyard with a rich history dating back to 1583 when François de Bloys married Marie Benoîte de Lasgebaton, whose father was president of the Bordeaux Parliament. Thus, Sénéjac came into noble hands.

Chateau Senejac has been widely recognized for its excellence. 2013 earned a top score of 89 points from Anthocyanes - Yohan Castaing. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the wine's exceptional quality and confirms its status as a standout in its class. Such recognition should instil confidence in the potential buyer, assuring them of the wine's exceptional quality.

Chateau Senejac 2013 is a wine that pairs beautifully with Western dishes, such as roasted lamb, beef stew, or mushroom risotto. However, it's also versatile enough to complement some Cantonese dishes, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy a fusion of flavours.
