Medium ruby, tight garnet rim. Ripe red fruits(strawberries and raspberries) and cassis(yes, it is a hot 2003 vintage), with soft tannins and hints of liquorice. On the palate, notes of black cherry, raspberry, blueberry, mint and graphite with a medium finish.
Alcohol is balanced, which finishes a bit sweetish by now. Chill it down to increase perceived acidity. It may keep for another two years.
The Garcin family, owners of the illustrious Clos L'Eglise in Pomerol, buys Chateau Barde Haut with 17 hectares composed of the classic clay and chalk soils of St Emilion.
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, Barde Haut has over-achieved significantly, compared to the other St Emilion Grand Crus. In recent years, the scores are in the level of 94 to 96. It was promoted to the rank of Grand Cru Classe in 2012!! Given the current price level, this 2003 is a good buy. We have been tasting this wine since 1996, in a tasting hosted by the local chapter Commanderie de Bordeaux.
Scores for 2003 are decent. A notable one is WS90.
