This 2017 CHATEAU CLOS DE BOÜARD 2017 is of deep purple and light pink rim. Full nose of wild violets, black raspberries, blueberries, plum, liquorice and anise. Palate mouthful of violets and is devoid of Montagne ‘particulieres’, and in that sense, it may not 'terroir' enough.
It is soft, more fleshy than 2016, silky textured, lush and intense offering sweet, ripe, berries with freshness and the perfect hint dark chocolate and coffee on the end note. Quite impressive as 2017. Modern style; purple tones throughout. Short palate as a first wine; but we think this may be adequate for long-term development. Composition is 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. ABV 13.5%.
We have several points for buying this 2017 wine:
Advanced and modern drinking now: ripe, with lots of fruit, dense, intense and structured.
A fine effort from the very experienced Hubert de Bouard(Angelus, de Franc, Bellevue and others)
Stable price and market support because Lois Maillet, a veteran merchant (LA Vintage we buy from as well) and son-in-law of Hubert de Bouard, is directing;
From excellent soils, with good and prestigious neighbours including Croix de Labrie, Fleur Cardinale, Fombrauge, Rocheyron, Troplong Mondot and Valandraud.
A wine of high-cost performance(only this low price?)
This is the second vintage, which has lots to offer in the long run.
Expensively made: pre-fermentation cold soak, vinification in traditional cement and barrel vats on a parcel by parcel basis; Malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels; cheap and straightforward Montage aged in 50% new, French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling?
