Domaine Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Terrassen 2018



Bright, straw yellow with green taints, it is packed with the tone of ripe apple, and, as right put by the Domaine Wancha tasters, it has a delicate citrusy nose with a touch of smoky tobacco and waxy honey. The palate is both elegant and powerful. There are juicy, exotic fruit flavours(citrus, ripe lemon), plenty of spices, and dry herbs(sappy ) that dominate the taste that is long and full. With a mineral(peppery, salty, zesty)finish, it feels lightish but is full-bodied—lots of precision, power, and longevity.

The score is high at WE93.

Terrassen has to be a cuvée from multiple terraced sites. wines. "Smaragd" stands for complex, full-bodied wines of the Wachau with ageing potential. It is a term used by Vinea Wachau members showing a dry wine with a minimum alcohol of 12.5%. They are harvested late and are true represtantives of their terroir. Domaine Wanchau writes that Terrassen plants the best grapes from different small terraced vineyards between Loiben and Spitz were hand-picked for this premium blend. The overall goal was to create a wine that reflects the typical Wachau wine style, which is defined by the unique climate and primary rock soils.

Yields are kept low(30 to 35 hectoliters per hectare with botrytis carefully removed by hand). Fermentation is stainless-steel and no malo, hence the style.

Served well-chilled directly from the fridge, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Terrassen is a versatile companion. The wine perfectly accompanies grilled fish (even with creamy sauces), deep-fried dishes like the famous "Wiener Schnitzel", the traditional Austrian "Tafelspitz" (beef pot-roast)- all sound farfetched to Hong Kong Tasters living in this SAR at this point of time. Hong Kong-style steamed and or grilled white meat such as chicken or veal will serve seamless.
