Kalleske Greenock Shiraz Barossa 2006(Part 2)

This wine is sourced from a single vineyard, located on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek in the Northern Barossa Valley. The vineyard consists of shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay and limestone, providing ideal growing conditions for Shiraz. The wine was matured in 60% American oak hogsheads (25% new) and 40 % French oak hogsheads (20% new), for a period of 18 months.

The Greenock Shiraz 2006 is deep ruby in colour with a mahogany rim. With 8 years in bottle, the first nose is tertiay tones of lead pencil, leather, sandalwood and licorice. On decanting, the bouquet is extremely vibrant with aromas of dark roses, plum, Christmas pudding, cocoa and sweet tobacco. The palate is full-bodied and fills the entire mouth with flavour. Tannins are ripe and soft. Flavours of red and black fruits are supported by well integrated subtle oak characters. The wine finishes with beautiful pure fruit intensity that lingers for a long time, recalling lots about some of the higher, full bodied Penfolds Bins. Lingering white prepper finish. If 2006 was a difficult vintage in the Barossa Valley you would never know it by tasting this shiraz from Kalleske.

Awarding this wine WA92, Jay Miller writes "The 2006 Greenock Shiraz comes from one of the estate’s young vineyards but you would never know this on taste. It is a glass-coating purple color with an expressive bouquet of smoke, mineral, bacon, and blueberry. Layered, bordering on opulent, the wine has superior depth of flavor, plenty of savory spice notes, and a lengthy finish. There is enough ripe tannin to support 3-4 years of additional cellaring. It should be at its best from 2011 to 2020." We found ourselves agreeing to a great extent this tasting.

The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic. The vines are 40 years old.The Kalleske family are active practitioners of sustainable farming.
