Pichon Baron 2012

Baron reflects the stylistics of Lynch Bages, as both have been under the baton of Jean-Michel Cazes. For the last ten years Englishman Christian Seely has been in charge and quality continues to rise. Latour-like in style, Pichon Baron by now has been a star performer in all our recent blind vintage tastings. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot aged in 80% new oak. The 2012 is tightly structured but seemed to have evolved to have ample flesh on the bones. Very strong cab character, such as cassis, green peppercorn and beautiful cinnamon spice. Excellent.

Tasters always say that Baron always like the refinement of Pichon Comtesse, we would like to say that this is probably not the case anymore.

Consistent scores from leading wine commentators.

95 points Wine Enthusiast

...This is a densely ripe wine, full of black fruits, smoky wood and generous tannins. Given its structure, the wine will obviously age well, even if it is drinkable in the medium term. (4/2013)

94 points James Suckling

A pretty core of ripe-berry, currant and mineral character to this red with a full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish to add. Creamy texture. Better in 2017. (2/2015)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As for the big sibling, the 2012 Pichon Baron (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) probably has the most saturated purple color of the Pauillacs. Its structure is apparent, and the wine offers a wealth of blackcurrant fruit interwoven with licorice, graphite, and background toasty oak. Full-bodied, opulent and moderately tannic, this wine is approachable now because of its low acidity, but promises to age beautifully for 20+ years. This is another great classic from Pichon Baron.
