Clos des Fees Cotes-du-Roussillon Villages 2011

This is a SGM, with high RP95 at dirt cheap prices. This wine is big, long live and expensively made. Made from 50% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Carignan and the rest Mourvèdre that was aged 16 months in roughly 60% new French oak, it’s a classic, structured, age-worthy Roussillon that exhibits lots of blackberry and cassis fruit, smoked herbs, licorice and scorched earth. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet light on its feel, with a firm, focused finish, give it 2-3 years and enjoy bottles through 2027.

The vintage 2011 is excellent, and was considered by Herve Bizuel to be the vintage of the century in the region. Quality, quantity, and ease were all words that could be used to describe it, and the resulting wines are destined for greatness in every stage of their lives. The Clos des Fees is old vines on hillside plots, mostly Syrah with Mourvedre, Grenache and Carignan. The grapes are left until the tannins are fantastically ripe but acidity remains, and everything in the winery is done by hand. This is a big, long-lived wine which spends 18 months in new oak barrels - it will be just entering its drinking window but will need decanting.
