2014 Campo Arriba, Yecla

January 13, 2017

Fruit driven and fleshy style. Never oaky. Very clean. Vivid ruby. Aromas of blueberry, violet pastille and wood smoke, with a spicy topnote adding vivacity. Fleshy and broad on entry, with sappy black and blue fruit flavors tightening up with air. Pretty elegant, with adequate complexities and expressive aromatics, as if the Monastrell potential has been realized to the full. Let it breathe in glass, serve it at lower temperatures slightly below 14 Celsius, savour this wine with friends over one hour and experience its changing Burgundian shades to eventually Bordeaux stylistics. We love this small wine(and the small money).

The Monastrell are almost 100 year-old and have been on limestone and sandy. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 700 and 900 meters!  It has been kept in French oak barrels for 3 months.

The best comment is from Parker:

RP93. The 2014 Campo Arriba comes from one of the highest elevations in Yecla and it's a blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 10% Grenache aged three months in small French oak. This winery, started in 1925 by the Candela family, has really hit pay day with this amazing value. Blackberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, and chalky minerality dominate the aromatics and flavors. It is full-bodied, the price is absurdly low for a wine of this quality, and I suspect it can age nicely for another 5-6 years, although its true value is its exuberance, fruit purity and density.

Bodegas Señorio de Barahonda made this wine was founded in 1925 and is located in the town of Yecla little northwest of Alicante in southern Spain. The winery specializes in the production of red wines from the traditional Spanish type of grape Monastrell (in France known as Mourvèdre). They made also unoaked versions, old vine version, crianzas, from modern varieties and on whites as well.

Robert Parker wrote, "This estate is one of the top discoveries of all my tastings "and" The price-to-quality ratio is extraordinary ". Also, most medals this winery got is from prestigious and difficult competitions, not from small and little-known ones.
