2006 SIERRA CANTABRIA RESERVA Rioja

Classic expression of Tempranillo red fruit(strawberries and cherries) and complex ‘rancio’ from Bordelaise type of nurture in wood. Structured and earthy, this wine has by now shed most of its tannins over years of bottle ageing and is giving a fine and elegant palate. ABV is 14.5%, but feels mild. Excellent value.

Compared to the 2011 Unica we promoted with great success last month, 2006 Reserva is an even more traditional Rioja Reserva which did not have the 2% Graciano for fixing colour.

Harvest is 15 days earlier (on 15 September 2006) for this Rioja, hence elegance and structure. Average yield is 35 Hls./Ha. Using 100% destemmed grapes (30+ years old vines), the wine is fermented 28 to 30 Celsius, hence the wine not too extracted. Skin contact duration is 14 days, with two pump-overs daily in the beginning with a light pump-over daily at the end.

Some 18 months were spent in Bordelaise barrels of (50%) French and (50%) American oak. Age of the barrels was like 20 % new oak, 80 % maximum “3 wines-barrel” Racked regularly every 4 months; bottled unfiltered in January 2009.
