Château Saint-Georges Cote Pavie 2007, St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

South-facing, Château Saint-Georges-Cote-Pavie is located south of Chateau Pavie-Macquin, north of Château Pavie and east of Gaffelière. It is nested on the hillside of Pavia on clay-limestone soils. It adjoins the famous Ausone vineyards. Now, both Pavie and Ausone are classed Grand Cru Classe Division A.

The 2007 (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) provides the opportunity to purchase some cracking quality drinking and delicious claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage. Plummy in character from the majority Merlot component but with enough spice and complexity(tertiary tones such as mushrooms, used leather, moca coffee, beef jerky, musk, ink) to make it more than just another drinking wine, the Cabernet Franc minority gives fragrances(dry flowers) and spiced up the nose with a slight bit of funk. Team drinks with ease over the complexities of classic structure(lifted acidities with still generous dark cherry and plum fruit followed by spcies and hints of whip-cream). Medium bodied, this wine is smartly textured with decent length and clean after-tastes. A refreshing and 'pretty'Grand Cru CLasse with no decanting required. Just drink over dinnner or munch.

Having tasted most of the vintages since its 2001, we truly believe Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. Yield is low (46 hl/ha); vines are tight packed (5500 vines per ha); soil from good mix of clay and Limestone. And, it is a Grand Cru Classe, with only 3000 cases or so.

People say 2007 is a bad year, and we say that this ‘bad’ year gives us better price and bigger bang for the buck. There is still more to come from it but it won't last as others would, but how further will you wait? It is incredibly pleasant now and for the next 3 years.
