Deep ruby with a tight rim. No sign of tiredness. Lifted nose dry, floral notes, followed by sweet prunes, plums, white pepper, dried figs and sultana. Prune -plum infused palate with raspberry, liquorice and sweet spices. Silky but spicy tannins, vanilla oak, long finish. While this JJ Hahn “1928” Shiraz 2005 Barossa Valley, Australia never miss a bit of energy and vigour after 13 years, there is plenty of round fruit for the riper, fruit-forward 2005 vintage. In the last 30 minutes, it turns to a high expression of terroir as much as fruit. Aftertaste is long with plenty of prune and plummy flavours. Slight fine tannins with acids to give a balanced but intense wine.
This wonder from Barossa Valley made by the famed maker Rolf Binder also exudes classic Barossa tones of white pepper, grilled meat, coffee, vanilla, leather and sweet wood. Already a ‘museum’ wine and a regular auction item, this wine is considered more elegant than its siblings JJ Hahn 1914. From vines planted in 1928, this wine is the younger brother of the other wine 1914 but no lack in purity and intensity of fruits.

The 2005 Shiraz 1928 is opaque purple-coloured with an expressive bouquet of cedar, pencil lead, mineral, violets, tar, blueberry, and blackberry. This is followed by a medium-to full-bodied wine with gobs of ripe fruit, spicy black fruit flavors already exhibiting complexity, a harmonious personality, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish.
