2016 EP Château Charmail Haut Medoc

Close. Ripe cassis fruit suppressed by the oak. The story goes that they have made the slightly strange choice of having 100% new oak for the primeurs when the final wine will only have 33%. An accommodation for critics and consumers may be. A new blend this year, after buying a few new plots, of 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The second vintage with Hubert de Bouard.

We think we know this wine well. In the past months, we have re-tasted 2005, 2007, 2008 and come to a firm understanding. This 2016 is quite worthy because:

  1. It will continue to evolve and become a good quaffing wine with full spectrum of primary, secondary and tertiary. It will remain simple fresh easy to drink (medium bodied; good fruit); pleasurable undemanding; stylish, dense and ripe.

  2. The 22.5 hectare vineyard gives good economy of scale for, and so he price is very competitive.

  3. Chateau Charmail is always one of the better CBs. Have confidence.

  4. Of excellent value. JS92 NM92; $1520 bottles of 12?
