JJ Hahn "1914" Shiraz 2005, Barossa Valley
Deep ruby with a tight rim. Aromatic with lots of big dark berry fruit flavour. Good length and depth; balanced and showing well for 13 years old. This wonder from Barossa Valley made by the famed maker Rolf Binder also exudes classic Barossa tones of white pepper, grilled meat, coffee, vanilla, leather and sweet wood. Full-bodied.
While it may lack just a bit of energy and vigour by now, there is plenty of round fruit for the riper, fruit-forward 2005 vintage. In the last 30 minutes, it turns to a high expression of terroir as much as fruit.
Already a ‘museum’ wine and a regular auction item, this wine is even more significant and bolder than its siblings JJ Hahn 1928.

The 2005 Shiraz 1914 is similarly styled to the 1928, but with slightly greater depth and concentration. It can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.
The J. J. Hahn wines are made by Rolf Binder from two vineyards separated by 50 yards, one planted in 1914 and the other in 1928. Both were tasted from barrel samples. They were aged in American oak, 30% new.
