2017, Wine Futures, Chateau Charmail
Red and black cassis, plum fruit. A fresh blend this year, after buying a few new plots, of 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.
The story goes that this 2017 Charmail has made the slightly strange choice of having 100% new oak for the primeurs when the final wine will only have 33%. An accommodation for critics and consumers may be.
We think we know this wine well. In the past months, we have re-tasted 2005, 2007, 2008, 2016 and come to a firm understanding. This 2017 is quite worthy because:
It will continue to evolve and become a good quaffing wine with a full spectrum of primary, secondary and tertiary.
It will remain simple fresh easy to drink (medium bodied; good fruit); pleasurable undemanding; stylish, dense and ripe.
The 22.5-hectare vineyard gives good economy of scale for, and so the price is very competitive. Chateau Charmail is always one of the better CBs. Have confidence.
