Caprice de Daviaud 2016, Second Wine

This market fills with lots of over-extracted, cheap Bordeaux reds. Some are dark coloured with poor quality stewed fruit while some give stale, damp wood tones, and with woody mid palate that give no fruit at all! You may also come across juice like, pressed wine with spices and a bitter taste which may come from nowhere.

In contrast to what we tasted this morning the second wine of Chateau Daviaud for immediate pleasure savours fresh and fruity.

Dont get me wrong. I am not saying this second wine is made by God. Medium ruby with tight garnet hues, it is a normally good wine that gives pure mixed red and black fruit, candied plums, a bit of flowers

and menthol. On the palate, there is warm red fruit with delicate acidities together with the ample, round texture by silky tannins and clean.

The vineyard is 50 ha, not small hence some economy of scale and is thus the wine is still cheap. Age of vines is from 7 years to 20 years giving lots of blending opportunities. Grapes on clay-limestone and clay-loam soils that make wines supple, elegant, well structured and very pleasant on the palate. Grape varieties are 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Cabernet Franc, so there is still a slight bit of complexity depsite the humble origin.

Vine training is on classic Guyot double. There is mechanical stripping before closure of the cluster., then Manual thinning and harvest to have a proper distribution of groups on the vines.

Food and wine pairing? Too flexible; no restrictions at all. The property belongs to the Galles family for four generations. Located in the town of SAINT ANDRE DU BOIS 10 km from LANGON and 50 km south of BORDEAUX on very sunny hillsides, the property overlooks the valley of the Garonne.

We award it DD88.
