Dust Kicker Shiraz 2006, Barossa Valley
A bottle of wine with a strange name, whose origin suggested by one Blimey Charlie comes from "some desperation out there in the ‘let’s-give-our-wine-a-name’-stakes", and suggests that "this wine is a tribute to the winemaker’s ‘trusty old work boots." Indeed Dust Kicker Shiraz 2006 made by the Schwarz Company by Jason Schwarz spent many hot vintage days walking the rows of more than seven individual site to select the perfect parcels of fruit to make this wine.
To us this wine allows the fruit to speak through the glass. Although the wine is not as energetic as it could have been, there are beautiful fruit elements of blueberry, blackberry, herbs (thyme, sage), liquorice, dark chocolate, violets and even some earthy/mineral flavours. There are Cab contents, so the structure is there with acidity and chalky tannins. Alcohol is at 14.5%, and production is a mere 600 cases.

The 2006 Dust Kicker is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvedre that spent 18 months in seasoned French oak before bottling without filtration (as are all the Schwarz wines). Purple-coloured, it offers up a complex nose of cedar, spice box, tobacco, earth notes, black cherry, and blueberry. Layered on the palate, this easy-drinking, pleasure-bent wine has gobs of flavour, a lush palate feel, and a fruit-filled finish.

Super-ripe fruit, yet vibrant, with plenty of richness across the palate.
