Cascina Chicco Barolo Riserva "Ginestra" DOCG 2010

Deep ruby, with a tight garnet rim.  Bright orange reflections.  An elegant nose: rose petals and violets, cleanly intense ripe cherries, new leather. A fine palate: clean red fruit finish; smooth and firm, sweet tannins; very long taste and bodied. Such a drinkable wine that it can pair with almost any dish. Cascina Chicco Barolo Riserva "Ginestra" DOCG 2010 is an understated wine in traditional style and can age well.

All Barolo Riservas from this Grand Cru Ginestra site fetches $800 to $1000 per bottle. Ginestra located in the township of Monforte d’Alba - Piedmont - Italy is with southwest and western exposure. This is a Grand Cru zone famous for producing great Barolos.  In 1800, Fantini commented that it was a land capable of producing Barolo wines of “superior excellence.” The soil is Clayey-calcareous, hence the structure and intensity. Time of harvest is made late at First half of October for more openness, hence the fruit ripeness.

Low yield-per vine does not exceed 1 kg! The grapes undergo two thinnings: one at the beginning of August and the other at the end of the month. Harvest is done by hand by dedicated vineyard workers . After crushing, alcoholic fermentation works for about 15 days in small, stainless steel tanks with repeated pump-overs for adequate colour extraction, hence the true colour of Nebiollo . Thereafter some  40-45 days marceration, hence the fine yet firm tannins. Then, the wine ages in big barrels for over specifications like 40 months before transferred to stainless steel tanks and then the bottle, hence the fruit style. Total maturation period is about seven years from the harvest date before the wine is ready to enter to market, yet it is so fruity. Variety is of course100% Nebbiolo.

95 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:

"Succulent and silky in texture, setting the stage for cherry, liquorice, leather, tobacco and salty flavors before the firm, assertive tannins grip the finish. Excellent length. Should come together with time. Best from 2022 through 2038. 300 cases made." – BS (Web Only - 2017)
