Our Story
As dedicated wine buyers, our mission is to uncover intriguing bottles that will delight you. So, what kinds of wines do we seek out?
We are drawn to wines that ignite our imagination, those elusive gems that shine with both excellence and value. To us, wine is an adventure, not merely something to sip. A wine with soul becomes a storyteller, while one without is simply a beverage. I remember an enchanting night at The Hong Kong Wine Society, when a single glass lingered in my memory long after the last drop. Experiences like these fuel our desire to share our most heartfelt and honest reflections.
We spotlight remarkable wines and carefully curated collections, always on the hunt for the next thrilling wine discovery. While our WSET Diplomas guide us, we rely even more on intuition, seeking out authenticity, regional character, and the stories woven into every bottle. We cherish the sense of place and the people behind each wine, believing every sip should transport you and reveal the hands that crafted it. As we taste, we relish the dance of balance, complexity, and personality, pondering how each wine complements food and whether it truly stands out. Occasionally, an unassuming bottle surprises us, becoming an unforgettable part of our journey.
Here are a few tasting tips to enrich your experience: begin by admiring the wine’s colour and clarity, subtle clues to its age and character. Swirl your glass to awaken its aromas, the first whispers of its story. Take a moment to savour the bouquet before tasting. As you sip, let the flavours linger, noticing the harmony of sweetness, acidity, tannin, and alcohol. To sense a wine’s authenticity or soul, trust your instincts. A soulful wine stirs memories or emotions, hinting at its birthplace and the devotion behind its creation.
Hong Kong is a fascinating market for wine promotions. Shoppers look for the best deals at every level. In my 30 years of experience in wine sales, investment, education, and writing, I’ve seen these trends emerge. According to recent auction results, Hong Kong wine auctions now account for approximately 40 per cent of global fine-wine sales (Zimmerman, 2019), and the sale of a rare bottle, such as a 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, for a record price exemplifies the strong demand for premium wines in the region. New trends, such as the rise of organic wines and online wine-tasting events, are also shaping the market and reflecting changing tastes. Lovers have embraced sustainable, organic bottles, driven by growing awareness of health and the environment. The era of digital technology has created opportunities for rare finds, letting collectors join global auctions with a click. Rising affluence, along with a renewed appetite for Western cuisine, has also spurred demand for prestigious labels.
Looking ahead, I see a continued shift toward premium wines and a growing curiosity for unusual, lesser-known varietals as people seek richer stories in every glass. Consider grapes such as Tannat, known for its deep colour and high tannin content, or the lesser-known Assyrtiko from Greece, which offers a vivid, mineral-rich profile. Another intriguing choice is the ancient Croatian grape variety Plavac Mali, which delivers bold flavours reminiscent of Zinfandel. While we cannot halt the momentum of change, we can pause to consider what really inspires us to buy. My advice: do not settle for value alone. If that is your only goal, any bargain bottle will suffice. Instead, seek out wines with soul, those rare treasures that remain in memory.
To me, a good bottle is simply a good wine, but there is undeniable magic in a fine Cru from Burgundy or Bordeaux, or the sparkle of Champagne. Whether it is a legendary treasure, a cult favourite, or a decadent dessert wine, the most cherished moments are those spent with friends, laughter, and a glass raised in discovery. Wine’s true beauty lies in the connections it creates among enthusiasts, merchants, and writers. Trusting your own palate and curiosity is the secret to genuine appreciation. Ultimately, wine is about personal journeys and shared memories as much as it is about tradition and expertise.
