Château La Cabanne 1999, Pomerol
Deep ruby, medium rim. Still dense in colour and weight for the class. It noses dry black cherries and plums, tanned leather, kirsch. It even has a hard and solid palate to start with, leading to a claret palate of, rounded tannins, spices and minerality. This medium-bodied Pomerol from a reasonably good vintage may not give the classic lushness and lacked the finesse some connoisseurs are searching. And, in Vivino, it has a reasonably good rate of 3.9 out of 5 from a statistical significant base of over 100 tasters.
Clive Coates recommended this wine, referencing its terroir and said that this 'Second Division' was on Bourgnuef-Vayron Chateaux Trotanoy and Clinet soils in the centre of Pomerol. Raised in oak barrels aged 14 to 18 months (60% new barrel) with 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, it is one of the chateaux of owner JP Estager also owned some six other chateaux in the area; hence there is some economy of scale. James Suckling et al. also commended a vertical tasting from 2000 to 2012(?). Unfortunately, he did not include this 1999 vintage. This wine can be found in some recent auctions.
