Tasting Rosemount Balmoral Shiraz, Vintages 1993 and 1995

The Rosemount Balmoral Shiraz 1993 is medium ruby with tones of mahogany. Colour is still bright and healthy. On nose it's was singing. It expresses beautiful forrest fruits with hints of pepper and tar. The palate was soft and fine. The flavour of the fruit is direct and settles through the mid palate before the spice and tobacco savouriness show at the finish, recalling leafy, spicy and bitter chocolate flavours surrounded with fine tannins. It is now a full matured wine with great balance and harmony. Tasting Team is of the view that this wine has evolved from its varietal character syrah and returned by now to the core element of soil?

The Rosemount Balmoral Shiraz 1995(by Philip Shaw) drums on a different speed. Of deep ruby with medium rim, it noses bouquet of ripe berry fruits, charcoal and meaty. Medium boded, on plalate it displays spice and plummy fruit with a fine integration of creamy flavours which add complexity. Smooth and still rich with concentration of plum and sweet berry fruits and background notes of cloves and spice flavours. Tasting Team is of the view that varietal connection is strong after 15 years in bottle.

The details from other sources go like this.

Made from grapes grown in 50-100 year old vineyards, this McLaren Vale classic is matured for nearly two years in new American oak prior to bottling. The richly textured fruit and deep, velvety tannins weave beautifully into a long, harmonious finish. This wine in its best vintages matures for 20 to 25 years with careful cellaring.

That McLaren Vale elegance echoes through the tasting both wines.

Official writings state that the distinctive Balmoral style pays tribute to the Shiraz wines of the Rhone Valley and Mediterranean – hence the traditional French name ‘Syrah.’ Predominantly sourced from the McLaren Vale sub-region of Seaview, this wine is made from premium parcels from carefully selected vineyards (ranging from 50 to 100 years old) that produce tiny quantities of exceptional fruit. The result is a wine that delivers intense depth of flavour, superb length and fine acidity with a soft, velvety tannin structure.

Sitting at the very top of the Rosemount Estate family tree, Balmoral has achieved both local and international success: winning both a Trophy and a Gold medal at the coveted Decanter World Wine Awards in 2011 and again in 2012 and receiving 90+ points in the notable US Wine Spectator across multiple Balmoral vintages.

Feel blessed to be able to taste 1993 and 1995 in a roll.
