I hunt down value wines with soul, the kind that tell stories, spark debates, and challenge your assumptions about what good and "affordable" can taste like. The deal: Hong Kong prices with free delivery in urban areas. Six-bottle minimum. Ready to explore? WhatsApp 852 66236746 or email cf.lau@dunndunn.hkKevin K Tang

Let’s be honest—Cantemerle is a 5th Growth from the Haut-Médoc. It’s never been a star in Hong Kong, and that’s just how it is. Still, if you want a wine that’s about balance and elegance, not prestige, Cantemerle delivers. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot set the tone, with a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Expect deep ruby colour, black fruit, spice, and a smooth finish across 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2021.

Cantemerle isn’t about sheer power. Compared to bigger Médoc names, these wines are lighter and more understated—especially in years like 2008, where you might miss some depth. The good news: these vintages skip the harsh tannins found in some younger Cantemerle and are at their best within 10–18 years. What sets them apart is a thread of minerality—think crushed stones or wet gravel—that runs alongside the fresh acidity, balance, and silky fruit. All are ready for you to enjoy now.

For this tasting, I’ve picked three consecutive vintages—2007, 2008, and 2009—then jumped to 2021. The older wines show Cantemerle’s classic style, shaped by tradition and the late 2000s climate. 2021 is modern: new winemaking, new challenges. Tasting them side by side, you’ll see how Cantemerle has evolved, yet stayed true to itself. It’s a rare look at both change and continuity in one flight.

Cantemerle 2007 (90 RP): 13% ABV. 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied with a dark plum hue and a floral, complex bouquet. Notes of toffee emerge with aeration. Elegant and refined, it is drinking well now and should remain enjoyable for several more years.

Cantemerle 2008 (88 RP): 12.5% ABV. 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. Understated and refined, with medium body and a bouquet of raspberry, red currant, crushed rock, and oak. Shows finesse and good concentration, though best enjoyed in the near term.

Cantemerle 2009 (93 GG): 13.5% ABV. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Intense garnet-red colour, with a deep nose of ripe red fruits and subtle roasted oak. Generous, fruit-forward palate with vibrant energy and a persistent finish, despite a touch of greenness. Outstanding vintage for the estate.

Cantemerle 2021 (DD90): 13% ABV. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. This vintage reflects Cantemerle’s modern approach, favouring gentle extraction for finer tannins and a more elegant texture. Precision winemaking and cooler fermentations preserve freshness and purity of fruit, while restrained oak use lets the terroir shine. Vibrant purple hue with focused aromas of blackcurrant, violet, and cedar. Medium-bodied and precise on the palate, featuring fine tannins and concentrated fruit. Oak is well-integrated, lending structure and subtle spice. Approachable now, with good mid-term aging potential.

In the end, Cantemerle isn’t chasing headlines or top auction prices—it’s simply a well-made, honest Bordeaux that rewards attention. If you’re looking for flash, look elsewhere. But if you want a Médoc that speaks softly, ages gracefully, and delivers real character for the table—this is it. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you want in your glass.
