Francois Villard Saint-Joseph Mairlant 2009, St Joseph

This wine is incredibly unique for five reasons:

  1. Yes, it has dark Syrah fruits, but really in a basket with lots of other fresh fruits. This wine is perfectly framed with balancing acidity and the minerality really shines through. There are lovely aromatics and notes of lavendar to go with the traditional hint of Syrah gaminess. This wine is drinking well now but will reward medium term age (2 to 3 years). We are more optimistic than Wine Spectator. Never rustic, this wine will reset your expectations.

  2. Francois Villard Saint-Joseph Mairlant 2009, St Joseph is no difficult La-la wines(La Mouline, La Landone and La Turque). With this wine, you don’t have to care if you are drinking a Cote Blonde or a Cote Brune. This is less demanding. And You don’t have to have break the bank as to cling on to famous names like Guigal, Chapoutier or Paul Jaboulet Aine either, because at that price, which is an incredibly low price for the highly popular St. Joseph AOC and with only 775 cases produced every year, this wine has got to be and good.

  3. Francois Villard Saint-Joseph Mairlant 2009 is consulted by the famous Yves Cuilleron. Winemaker Francois Villard did not start out to be a wine maker. As a foodie and sommelier, Francois Villard surely makes wines for enjoyment. Try to match this wine with some appropriately marinated fishes (Continental, creamy styles suggested) such as sole, sea bass, John Dory, cod, salmon, arctic char, trout.

  4. Of course, Vintage 2009 is one real excellent year.

  5. Super-valued, at this price. It’s a WS92.

"Tight and muscular, with coffee, braised fig and grilled meat notes up front, while the core of currant paste and tobacco hangs back for now. The tangy finish has lots of grip, with lingering mesquite and iron notes. Best from 2009 through 2014. 775 cases made." -92 points Wine Spectator
