2004 Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz

The 2004 Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz is an elegant Barossa Shiraz by now, with lots of intense bouquet and palate. It is has excellent, seamless structure(structure, tannins, acidity, fruit and wood) at a recent tasting . This wine should evolve for another 5+ years. Yum.

Laytons writes, ‘Meshach Shiraz is the flagship of the Grant Burge winery. It derives mostly from the Filsell Vineyard near Lyndoch, planted in 1920, with additional contributions from three other small sites, all with vines 100+ years old. The wine is matured in mostly new American and French oak hogsheads for around 22 months, and then in bottle for three years before release as a four to five year old. Meshach is a generous Barossa style with a ripe, dense palate packed with fruit, chocolaty tannins and supported by malty/roasted-chestnut new oak. Meshach develops attractive choc-berry/panforte characters with age. Named after Burge’s great-grandfather, Meshach neatly reflects both traditional winemaking philosophies and contemporary practices. The wine is prized for its consistency and cellaring potential.’ HH96, JH95.

Deep red, slight purple. Rich dense colour. Very rich, dense, savoury nose, lots of oak/barrel-age impact, very smooth and fleshy: high-extract, good density and concentration. drive and length. Plenty of alcohol but not unbalanced. A big, big wine, loaded with everything but very good: a hedonic romp. Great richness and power, incredible length, an extraordinary wine. Immense length. Long term.

Deeply coloured and brightly fruited; a big wine with dense fruit, mocha and blackberry, and a lively splash of attractive red fruits; the palate is dense , yet there is a suppleness that provides a fine and focused finish. Shiraz. Cork.
