Two top wines from Bodegas Neo

Parker et al. highly commended Bodegas Neo consists of a bunch of young guys having the time of their lives, now making wine everywhere, as well as designing wine labels, recording music videos, and generally partying. But when it comes down to their two top wines listed below, they are deadly serious.

From DO Ribera Del Duero, Neo is produced from 100 per cent Tempranillo grapes, sourced from the winery’s vineyards around the town of La Horra to the south of the province of Burgos, near the northern border of the Ribera del Duero appellation. Neo made from old vines planted in the mid to late 1940s; yields the vines are low, with production limited to 3,500 kilograms per hectare. The grapes were individually picked, selected at optimum ripeness and collected in 16-kilogram boxes. The grapes were de-stemmed by hand, and after pressing, the must goes through a three-week maceration process, followed by alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in small, stainless-steel vats. The wine was aged in new oak barrels for 20 months, with 80 per cent being French oak and 20 per cent American. The final wine was bottled without fining or filtration. Annual production is around 2,000 cases.

The top-top Neo Punta Esencia is produced from 100 per cent Tempranillo grapes, sourced from a single vineyard, located in La Horra. Punta Esencia made from even older vines which planted between 1920 and 1935 are even lower; production even more meticulous. The wine was aged in new oak barrels for 24 months, with 80 per cent being French oak. This process is followed by one racking into 100 per cent new French oak for four more months. Hence, this wine is even more exceptional and detailed. The final wine was bottled without fining or filtration. Annual production is around 450-550 cases!
