Albert Brenot Maranges 1er Cru 'Les Clos Roussots' 2014

Bright ruby. Aromas of cherries, strawberries, violets and some mineral/chalky and barnyard(leather and used oak) notes. On the palate, smooth start, red fruit-driven, lively acidity and fruit-clothed tannins. Short-medium length. Overall, a classic 'Beaune' softness balanced by vivaciousness, however, that misses some depth. Some ageing potential. It is at its best for the class.

Maison Albert Bernot started in 1849. It is a traditional maker. It always uses old vines to produce richly concentrated fruit, opts for long macerations without adding cultured yeast, no fining and no filtration to protect the pulpous flesh that coats the sturdy tannins, hence this is still easy to drink for a more intense 2014. This Maranges 1er Cru 'Les Clos Roussots' is their lesser cru on the mid slope. Maranges, the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune, was long overshadowed by its northern neighbours despite its impressive terroir. Add meticulous vineyard management and old vines in top sites to the equation, and it is no surprise why Maranges is home to some of the best values in all of Burgundy.
