Château Kirwan 2012 opens with a classic Margaux bouquet of mature blackcurrant, blackberry, violets, and cedar. On the palate, it surpasses the 2013 vintage, offering generous layers of dark fruit, umami notes of meat and spice, and subtle minerality. There is less meatiness noramlly assocaited with KIrwan regaredlss of vintage. The fruitiness is complemented by velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and a lingering finish complement the fruit, reflecting Kirwan’s signature strength with added refinement and finesse. This vintage exemplifies Margaux’s depth, structure, and character.

Alcohol is balanced at 13%. The blend consists of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. Vines in Cantenac provide depth and structure, while smaller plots near Margaux village add finesse. Eighteen months in French oak, with about one-third new barrels, make good the wine’s spice, texture, and refined structure.

The 2012 Kirwan is already showing well and will continue to develop complexity and balance. There are years of mileage behind, maybe until 2030?

Critical scores: Wine Enthusiast 91, Wine Spectator 90, James Suckling 92. We score it 92.

The Hong Kong average on Wine Searcher is HK$340-400 per bottle. Your price is HK$320, offering notable value.

Kirwan questions the traditional view of Margaux as only delicate and floral. The 2012 is bold yet balanced, with substance, polish, and energy. For people seeking more than elegance, this wine offers depth and character at a highly competitive price in Hong Kong. This is an opportunity to experience a richer expression of Margaux.
