Prieur de Meyney 2010, St Estephe

Twist of red fruit (cherries), cassis, plums and sandalwood. Tones of dry rose, white/dark chocolate, and wipe cream. Very similar to first wine Chateau Meyney in terms of strength and power on nose, though the fruit is not as dusty and mineral as its First Wine. Punchy alcohol in first instance, which smoothen a little throughout the tasting. On palate, fresh fruit, chewy and firm texture as well as in the flavour. Tannins are well maneuvered. Finish is spicy and soft. JS92, for First Wine.

Some 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot. Meyney is the neighbour of Château Montrose, the prestigious 2nd Cru Classé. It has a wonderful vineyard and its owners manage to make the most of it to produce typical to the older school of Saint-Estèphe wine: power, structure and longevity. We think this little second can keep evolving for 2 or 3 years. A competent quaffing wine.
