La Rioja Alta Arana Reserva 2009
La Rioja Alta Arana Reserva 2009 still gives fresh red fruit, despite its eight years of age(among which three years in barrels). And for that quality and long ageing, the wine is dirt cheap.
It is a classic in the colour manifestation(medium ruby, medium orange rims), nose(red cherry fruit, balsamic, earthy, tobacco) and palate(plum fruit, hint of meat, vanilla). Ageing potential is still there, thanks to the colour and tannins from 5% Mazuelo and the free fruit from the 95% of quality Tempranillo.
It would seem that some would consider the higher line Reserva 890 and Reserva 904 as better wines(904 is always the most successful seller in Hong Kong), but we thought Ardana is no less, for its new orientation, delicacy and poise of red fruits, spice and American Oak tones that are just easier to appreciate(ABV at mere 13.5%). Therefore, Spanish writers give 94 point level and Suckling awards 96 points.
96 points James Suckling "This is a powerful and rich red with black truffle and blueberry character. Sweet tobacco, too. Full body, tannic and flavorful. Yet open and polished. Fantastic finish. Great ageing potential. Drink or hold. " (7/2016)
